everything was quiet, then the rope went very slack.   His voice echoed up the pipe in a loud scream, and we all heard a horrible CLAP.

pulling the rope back up, his belt had been ripped off his pants along with the loop in his shoulder pack that had also been secured.  it was like something had swallowed him whole.
